Antioch Cemetery
Alabama
This quiet ground holds some of the oldest history in Blount County. Antioch Cemetery was once called Glover's Graveyard, and its oldest graves are said to date to the very early days of settlement. Today it holds more than a thousand graves, among them veterans from nearly every American war.
Every year on the fourth Sunday in May, families gather here for what they call Decoration Day, an old Southern tradition of cleaning the graves, laying fresh flowers, and remembering the dead together. The cemetery is listed on the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register, and its trustees have raised a marker to tell its story. Two centuries of one community rest beneath these stones.
