Battle of Fort Blakeley
Near Mobile, Alabama
On the ninth of April, eighteen sixty-five, the last major battle of the Civil War was fought on this ground at Fort Blakeley. The timing is haunting. That very same day, hundreds of miles to the northeast in Virginia, Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses Grant at Appomattox. The men fighting here did not yet know the war was effectively over.
This was the climax of the Union campaign to capture Mobile, the last major Confederate port still holding out. Around sixteen thousand federal troops, including United States Colored Troops, assaulted roughly four thousand Confederate defenders dug in behind earthworks. In the late afternoon the lines were stormed and overrun.
Within days, Mobile itself surrendered. Today the field is preserved as a state park, a quiet place where the war's long ending finally played out.
