Bloch Park and the Selma Cloverleafs
Alabama
This little ballpark in Selma has been hosting baseball for the better part of a century. From the early nineteen fifties into the early nineteen sixties, Bloch Park was home to the Selma Cloverleafs of the Alabama Florida League, a minor league club that drew local crowds in the era when nearly every Southern town fielded a professional nine. The park is named for the Bloch family, who helped pay for its construction, and its covered grandstand seats about fifteen hundred fans.
The Cloverleafs name was revived for a later independent league team and a summer college squad. The playing field carries the name of Terry Leach, a Selma man who pitched in the major leagues. Today the park still hosts high school and American Legion baseball, alongside a playground, a walking trail, and the local farmers market.
