Chickasaw Shipyard Village
Near Mobile, Alabama
Chickasaw Shipyard Village in Mobile County, Alabama, was built starting in nineteen seventeen to house workers at the Chickasaw shipyard, which Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation bought in nineteen forty and expanded during the Second World War. The company village, a planned community of identical frame cottages, gave workers and their families stable housing close to the yards. Chickasaw is named for the Chickasaw Nation, whose traditional territory extended through this part of Alabama before removal in the eighteen thirties. The village historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the more complete surviving examples of wartime worker housing in the Gulf South, a physical record of the industrial mobilization that won the war.
