Confederate Memorial Park
Alabama
Confederate Memorial Park near Marbury, Alabama, occupies the site of the Alabama Confederate Soldiers' Home, which operated from nineteen oh two until nineteen thirty-nine as a refuge for aging veterans of the Confederate Army. At its peak, between nineteen fourteen and nineteen eighteen, about one hundred veterans and their widows lived here. The last veteran resident died in nineteen thirty-four, and the home itself closed in nineteen thirty-nine, though the state did not establish the site as Confederate Memorial Park until nineteen sixty-four.
The site includes the graves of more than three hundred veterans and a small museum documenting the home's operation. It is now an Alabama State Historic Site. The park is a complicated place: a record of men who fought for a cause bound to slavery, aging into poverty in a state too poor to fully care for them, remembered through an institution built in the era of Lost Cause mythology.
