Georgiana: Where Hank Williams Found His Voice
Alabama
Georgiana was founded in eighteen fifty-five by Pitt Milner, a minister who moved from Georgia when the Louisville and Nashville Railroad laid its line through Butler County. He combined his daughter's name with his home state to name the town. The connection to country music royalty came later.
Hiram Hank Williams was born near Mount Olive in Butler County in nineteen twenty-three, and the family moved to a house on Rose Street in Georgiana around nineteen thirty-one. He spent much of his boyhood here, years when the seeds of his sound were planted. The boyhood home on Rose Street is now a museum, and each spring Georgiana hosts a Hank Williams Festival honoring the artist who became country music's defining voice.
