Good Hope: Church, Germans, and Monks
Alabama
Good Hope takes its name from the Good Hope Baptist Church, established here in eighteen forty-two. The congregation came first, the town second. In the eighteen seventies, German immigrants settled alongside the original families, and by eighteen eighty they had built the district's first schoolhouse together.
Then, in eighteen ninety-six, German Benedictine monks founded a small Catholic mission on the old Bremen road, naming it Loretto after a famous Italian sanctuary. A Baptist church, a German schoolhouse, and a Benedictine chapel within a few square miles: a snapshot of how Cullman County's hill country was pieced together faith by faith. Good Hope incorporated in April nineteen sixty-two, more than a century after its namesake church first gathered.
