Saint Michael's Catholic Church and Saint Florian

Alabama

This is the heart of Saint Florian, a small town settled by German Catholic families and named for a Roman martyr. In eighteen seventy-two, Catholic settlers of German ancestry moved onto a former plantation here in Lauderdale County and founded both the town and Saint Michael's Catholic Church, a Catholic church in the county. The first building was a large frame structure on the south side of the old Military Road, led by a German priest.

The congregation moved the church to this site a few years later and later put up the present building. Its stained glass windows are said to have come from Germany. Benedictine priests have served the parish ever since, keeping the community's old country roots alive.
