The Bryant Museum: Cathedral of Crimson Tide Football
Near Tuscaloosa, Alabama
On the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa stands a museum dedicated to the man who turned college football into a religion in this state. Paul William Bryant arrived in Tuscaloosa in nineteen fifty-eight with a reputation for hard discipline and a hunger for championships. Over the next twenty-five seasons he delivered six national titles and three hundred twenty-three career wins, a record at the time of his retirement in nineteen eighty-two.
The Paul W. Bryant Museum opened in nineteen eighty-eight, housing his houndstooth hats, trophies, game film, and the full history of Alabama football dating back to the program's first team in eighteen ninety-two. Bryant himself had pushed for the museum in his final years.
He died just weeks after coaching his last game.
