Wilcox County Confederate Monument
Alabama
This is Camden, the seat of Wilcox County, and the monument here honors the county's Confederate dead. It was installed in eighteen eighty by two local groups, the Ladies Memorial Association and the Wilcox Monumental Association, raised by women who had lost husbands, sons, and brothers in the war. It stands near the red brick Greek Revival courthouse, completed in eighteen fifty-seven and built by Alexander Bragg, brother of the Confederate general Braxton Bragg.
In eighteen sixty-five Union forces ransacked that courthouse, but officials had been warned in time and carried the county records away to safety before the soldiers arrived. The courthouse was later dedicated to Enoch Hooper Cook, a Confederate veteran from Wilcox County who lost all six of his sons in the war.
