Armytown
Alaska
This patch of windswept ground was once a small city of metal huts called Armytown. When American forces seized Adak in the summer of nineteen forty-two, they had to build everything from nothing on a treeless island battered by storms. Army aviation engineer battalions, working alongside Navy construction men, the Seabees, threw up a settlement of Quonset huts here.
In a matter of months they created shelter and support for the enormous invasion force gathering on Adak, a very large force of troops and construction workers preparing to retake the islands of Attu and Kiska from Japan. Armytown was the staging ground for that campaign, a temporary town built for war at the very edge of the map.
