Timothy Treadwell's Last Camp
Alaska
Out here near Kaflia Bay, on the wild coast of Katmai National Park, is the place where Timothy Treadwell spent his last days. For thirteen summers Treadwell lived among the brown bears of this peninsula, filming them up close, giving them names, convinced he could move safely among them. He became a celebrity, but seasoned park rangers and biologists warned for years that he was crossing lines no person should cross with a wild grizzly.
In early October of two thousand three, Treadwell and his girlfriend Amie Huguenard were killed and largely consumed by a large male bear at their camp. A pilot arriving to fly them out found a bear sitting over human remains. Their deaths became the subject of Werner Herzog's haunting documentary called Grizzly Man, a film that wrestles with the line between loving the wild and forgetting how wild it truly is.
