Trooper Bruce Heck
Alaska
This monument along the Glenn Highway remembers Alaska State Trooper Bruce Heck. One winter, a man who had just robbed a store and beaten its owner stole a taxi and led Trooper Heck on a high speed chase before crashing and fleeing on foot into the snow. In the struggle that followed, Heck was killed.
A backup trooper found his body off the highway. Bruce Heck was a longtime veteran of the troopers, a familiar presence on this stretch of road through the Matanuska Susitna valley. The man responsible was convicted of murder and sentenced to many decades in prison.
In Heck's honor, the state named a stretch of the Glenn Highway, the country he patrolled.
