Four Corners Monument
Arizona
Just a few miles south, Four Corners is the only place in the United States where four states meet at a single point: Arizona, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. The boundary goes back to eighteen sixty-eight, when a federal surveyor named Ehud Darling set the Colorado-New Mexico line at the thirty-seventh parallel. A second survey in eighteen seventy-five extended the north-to-south line between Arizona and New Mexico territories, and where the two lines crossed, Chandler Robbins placed a sandstone shaft.
A brass disk replaced the older markers in nineteen thirty-one. The monument sits entirely on Navajo land, managed by the Navajo Nation Parks and Recreation Department. Thousands of visitors in peak season stand with a hand or foot in each state.
