Homolovi State Park
Arizona
Just north of Winslow, Arizona, along the Little Colorado River, sit the ruins that the Hopi people call Homolovi, meaning Place of the Little Hills. Between roughly twelve hundred sixty and fourteen hundred, ancestral Hopi communities built a cluster of large pueblos here, some with more than a thousand rooms, before migrating north to the mesas they have occupied ever since. The site is sacred to the Hopi, who regard Homolovi as part of the migration route their clans traveled on the way to their current homeland.
Arizona State Parks designated it a state park in nineteen eighty-six after a period of damaging pothunting by artifact looters. Today the park is managed by Arizona State Parks in close consultation with the Hopi Tribe, who maintain ceremonial connections to the site and have had ancestral items repatriated from museum collections.
