Montezuma Castle National Monument

Near Jerome, Arizona

Tucked into a natural alcove about ninety feet above Beaver Creek, one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in North America has been watching the Verde Valley for more than six hundred years. The people who built it were the Sinagua, a name archaeologists gave them from the Spanish for without water, though that label hardly fits. Here in the Verde Valley the Sinagua were anything but waterless. The creek below ran year-round, the soil was fertile, and by the twelve hundreds they had turned this sheltered corner of Arizona into a thriving agricultural community.

The structure itself is five stories tall with roughly twenty rooms, all built by carrying limestone blocks two-thirds of the way up a sheer limestone cliff face. The walls were laid in mud mortar, the ceilings supported with sycamore beams, and the rooms were cool in summer and retained heat through winter. Families lived here for generations, growing corn, squash, and beans on the valley floor below and retreating each evening to a home that required a ladder to reach, a design that was as much about security as about shelter from the Arizona sun.

Early Anglo settlers assumed, wrongly, that the Aztec emperor Montezuma had some connection to the site, hence the name. In fact the Sinagua had no relationship with Aztec civilization. Their descendants include Hopi clans and other Native communities, who consider this place a part of their ancestral homeland.

The site was declared a national monument by President Theodore Roosevelt in nineteen oh six, making it one of the very first federal protections of a prehistoric archaeological site in the United States. Public access into the structure itself ended in nineteen fifty-one, after decades of well-meaning visitors caused irreversible damage. Today the view from the paved trail below is arresting enough: a perfectly fitted dwelling engineered into living rock, silent above the cottonwoods.
