Quartzsite: A Ghost Town That Found Its People
Arizona
In eighteen sixty-six Charles Tyson built a stage station here called Tyson's Wells, sometimes called Fort Tyson though it was never a military post, and prospectors worked the surrounding hills for decades. For most of a century it teetered on irrelevance.
Then in nineteen sixty-five, the Pow Wow Rock, Gem, and Mineral Show launched what became one of the strangest annual migrations in America. Every January and February, Quartzsite's permanent population of about twenty-four hundred swells to nearly one million, as RV travelers, gem traders, snowbirds, and rock hounds converge on the open BLM desert surrounding the town. Roughly nine major gem and mineral shows run through the season. Vendors spread across the flats for miles.
The town that gold mining could not sustain became a capital of rockhound culture and nomadic retirement. Quartzsite proves that the right niche, however unlikely, can anchor a desert crossroads indefinitely.
