The Amerind Foundation, Art and Archaeology in Dragon Valley
Near Benson, Arizona
Hidden in a boulder-strewn canyon called Texas Canyon, the Amerind Foundation is one of the most quietly important private archaeology institutions in the American Southwest. William Shirley Fulton, a businessman and amateur archaeologist, founded it in nineteen thirty-seven, naming it by blending the words American and Indian. Fulton built a Spanish Colonial Revival compound among the granite boulders and began excavating surrounding sites, eventually amassing tens of thousands of artifacts from cultures across the hemisphere.
The museum holds major collections from Casas Grandes and other sites across the Southwest and northern Mexico alongside fine art of the American West. Researchers still come here from universities around the world. The granite rock formations around it are so dramatic that they draw photographers and rockhounds from across the region.
