The Chloride Cemetery

Near Chloride, Arizona

West of the town, out among the creosote and the rocky ground, lies the Chloride cemetery, an old mining town burial ground. It is a plain, wind scoured place, its graves marked by simple headstones, iron fences, and wooden crosses, some carefully tended and others slowly surrendering to the desert. The ground was almost certainly receiving Chloride's dead from the earliest boom years of the town.

A frontier mining town was a dangerous place, and a cemetery like this quietly records why. Cave ins, falls, and blasting accidents in the mines took young men in their prime. Disease swept through crowded camps that lacked clean water and modern medicine.

Childbirth and childhood illness claimed women and infants. Reading the dates and the ages on these stones is one of the most honest ways to understand what life in Chloride actually cost. For many families who came here chasing silver, this hillside is where their story in Arizona ended.

Please walk gently and respectfully among the graves. This is not a stage set. It is a real resting place, still cared for by the small community that has never entirely left this town.
