Arkadelphia Confederate Monument

Arkansas

This marble soldier on the Clark County Courthouse grounds was raised in nineteen eleven by the Harris Flanagin chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, to honor local men who served in the Confederate army.

Funding it was a struggle. The chapter borrowed fifteen hundred dollars to buy the monument, then announced in the local paper that it would need to raise sixty dollars a month for two full years to pay the debt off. The statue, carved from Italian marble on a base of Georgia marble, was dedicated in an elaborate ceremony in May of nineteen eleven that began in the morning and ran into the afternoon.

The monument was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen ninety-six.
