Clinton Birthplace Home, Hope
Arkansas
The two-and-a-half-story house at one seventeen South Hervey Street in Hope, Arkansas, is where William Jefferson Clinton spent the first four years of his life, from his birth in nineteen forty-six until his mother remarried and the family moved to Hot Springs. Clinton lived here with his widowed mother and his maternal grandparents, Eldridge and Edith Cassidy, who had purchased the house in nineteen thirty-eight. The house was built in nineteen seventeen and contains six rooms including the nursery where the future forty-second president slept.
After Clinton took office in nineteen ninety-three, a foundation raised money to restore and open it. The Clinton Birthplace Foundation operated it from nineteen ninety-seven until the National Park Service took ownership in twenty ten, making it the seventh presidential birthplace protected as a National Historic Site.
