Elm Springs in the Civil War

Near Fayetteville, Arkansas

You're passing through Elm Springs, Arkansas, a crossroads that saw soldiers gather in the early years of the war.

In the winter of eighteen sixty-one, newly mustered Confederate recruits trained here before marching north into Missouri. By eighteen sixty-two it served as a mustering site for Confederate units from Arkansas and Missouri. The community sat at the seam of two loyalties, and armies of both sides slept, drilled, and passed through on roads that are still here today.
