Judsonia: The Town That Rebuilt
Arkansas
On March twenty-first, nineteen fifty-two, an F-four tornado tore through Judsonia, Arkansas, in White County. Fifty people died, more than three hundred were injured, and the twister leveled the school, two churches, most of the business district, and block after block of homes. It was part of the deadliest tornado outbreak in Arkansas history, with one hundred eleven fatalities statewide that single day.
What happened next surprised the nation. Judsonia's neighbors poured in, volunteers rebuilt at extraordinary speed, and the community refused to scatter. The following year, Grit magazine named Judsonia the Most Community-Conscious Small Town in America.
The award acknowledged something tornadoes occasionally reveal: that the social fabric of a small town can outlast the buildings.
