The Batesville Confederate Monument
Arkansas
Most Confederate monuments in the South are a marble soldier on a column. This one is different. Raised in nineteen oh seven by local Confederate veterans and the Daughters of the Confederacy, the Batesville Confederate Monument is a massive three-tiered tower of stone, about twenty feet tall, with castle-like notches near the top.
It was built not of imported marble but of local limestone, the stone known as Batesville marble, quarried locally and designed by the architect Otto Pfeiffer. Independence County sent many companies of men to the Confederate army, and the monument honors them and the women who supported them. It stands at the corner of Main and Broad streets and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen ninety-six.
