The Conway Confederate Monument
Arkansas
On the lawn of the Faulkner County Courthouse in Conway stands a plain stone obelisk, nearly seventeen feet tall, with a square base. It was raised by the Robert E. Lee Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a group organized here in nineteen oh three, who spent years raising around fifteen hundred dollars for the project.
The obelisk was dedicated in October of nineteen twenty-five, part of a long wave of monument-building led across the South by descendants of Confederate soldiers. Its inscription carries the years of the war and a dedication to the county's Confederate dead, though the carver left a small misspelling in the stone that remains there to this day. The monument was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in nineteen ninety-six.
