The Geographic Center of Arkansas
Near Little Rock, Arkansas
A few steps off this highway sits the exact middle of Arkansas, or at least the middle as the state reckoned it in nineteen thirty-six. That year, Arkansas marked its centennial, one hundred years since statehood, and a wave of commemorative monuments went up across the state. The Arkansas Society of the Daughters of American Colonists set a slant-faced stone marker here to fix the spot.
The inscription tells passing travelers that the geographical center of Arkansas lies just north of the road. It is a small, easy thing to drive past without noticing, but it marks a real surveyor's answer to a simple question, where exactly is the heart of the state. Bryant has grown up around it in the decades since the marker was placed.
