The Monticello Confederate Monument

Arkansas

The women of the W. F. Slemons Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy raised this Monticello monument the hard way, holding teas and staging plays until they had raised the money.

In time they had their statue, a Confederate infantryman standing atop a tall shaft. It was unveiled at the Drew County Courthouse in the nineteen teens. The chapter took its name from William Ferguson Slemons, a Monticello lawyer who had served as a Confederate cavalry colonel and later went to Congress after Reconstruction ended in Arkansas.

The monument was later moved to Oakland Cemetery, according to local accounts.
