Autodesk: The Software That Replaced the Drafting Table

Near San Francisco, California

North of San Francisco, where the highway crosses the Marin headlands toward San Rafael and Sausalito, you are passing through the birthplace of software that changed how the entire built world gets designed. Autodesk, the company behind AutoCAD, was founded on January thirtieth, nineteen eighty-two, in nearby Mill Valley by a programmer named John Walker and fifteen other co-founders who pooled their resources and their bets.

The core product, AutoCAD, had been conceived by a software developer named Michael Riddle, who was also one of the founders. Walker licensed the software from Riddle in exchange for royalties, a remarkable deal given that Autodesk had almost no money at the time. The founders were so strapped for cash that they ran the company from their homes and drove used cars to customer meetings.

The turning point came at COMDEX in November of nineteen eighty-two, the big computer trade show of the era. Walker later described it simply: COMDEX nineteen eighty-two. AutoCAD was one of the first computer-aided design programs that could run on a personal computer, rather than on expensive workstations that cost more than a house. Architects, engineers, and drafters who had spent their careers hunched over drawing tables suddenly had an affordable alternative. Orders poured in.

Within a few years, the drafting table was becoming obsolete. AutoCAD became the global standard for technical drawing, and Autodesk grew into one of the most valuable software companies in the world. The platform eventually expanded into three-dimensional design, animation, film visual effects, and building information modeling.

The movies you watch were shaped by Autodesk tools. The buildings you walk through were drawn in AutoCAD. The cars on the road were designed in Autodesk software. And it all started in a house in Mill Valley, a few miles from where you are right now.
