CC Sabathia: From Vallejo High to the Hall of Fame

Near Vallejo, California

Carsten Charles Sabathia the Second was born in Vallejo on July twenty-first, nineteen eighty, and attended Vallejo High School, where by his freshman year he was over six feet tall and throwing a fastball at ninety miles per hour. In his senior season he compiled a record of six wins and no losses with an earned run average of zero point seven seven and eighty-two strikeouts across fewer than forty-six innings pitched. Baseball America named him the top high school prospect in Northern California.

He was also an all-conference tight end in football who signed a letter of intent to play football and baseball at the University of Hawaii. The Cleveland Indians made that decision unnecessary: they selected him in the first round of the nineteen ninety-eight MLB draft with the twentieth overall pick. He went directly from Vallejo High School to professional baseball.

The career that followed ran nineteen seasons. Sabathia won the Cy Young Award with Cleveland in two thousand seven. He pitched in World Series competition with the New York Yankees. He recorded two hundred fifty-one career wins, placing him among the most successful left-handed pitchers of the modern era.

In two thousand twenty-five, CC Sabathia was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Vallejo has produced major-league players across multiple generations; Sabathia is the one who went to Cooperstown.

The high school where he played is still on Nebraska Street. The fastball clocked there led to everything else.
