Dream: A Tribute to Dr. King
Near La Jolla, California
Near you stands a public sculpture called Dream, a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Junior. Bronze hands rise from the ground, each forming a letter in American Sign Language. Together they spell a single word: dream.
The choice of sign language is deliberate. King's vision was meant to reach everyone, across every barrier of language, hearing, or circumstance. The sculpture was installed in San Diego to honor the movement King led and the speech he delivered at the March on Washington on August twenty-eighth, nineteen sixty-three, when he shared his dream before roughly two hundred fifty thousand people on the National Mall. Bronze hands, spelling hope in silence.
