Inyo National Forest: The Bristlecone Pines, Four Thousand Eight Hundred Years of Standing Still
California
The oldest known non-clonal living organism on earth is a tree. It is a Great Basin bristlecone pine. It is standing in the White Mountains above the Owens Valley, in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest inside the Inyo National Forest, at an elevation above ten thousand feet where the soil is so poor and dry and cold that almost nothing else can survive. That poverty of conditions is exactly why the tree is still here. In a better environment, faster-growing competitors would have shaded it out centuries ago. Here, nothing competes. The tree grows a fraction of an inch per year, produces dense resin-saturated wood that resists rot and insects, and keeps standing after other trees would have fallen.
The tree's name is Methuselah. Its age has been established through core sampling at four thousand eight hundred fifty-five years, which means it germinated around twenty eight hundred BCE, centuries before the Egyptian pyramids were built. Its exact location is not disclosed publicly, and the Forest Service has not posted identifying signs. This is a deliberate policy. Several bristlecone pines with known high ages have been damaged by vandalism, and one specimen in Great Basin National Park was cut down by a graduate student in nineteen sixty-four before its age was known. The researcher was measuring the age of the rings and inadvertently killed the oldest tree then known to science. That tree was older than Methuselah. It had no name.
You can walk among the bristlecones at the Schulman Grove and Patriarch Grove in the White Mountains. Some of the trees you are looking at are more than three thousand years old. They look it: twisted, whitened, stripped of bark on their windward sides, clinging to rock by roots that have had millennia to find purchase. They are not impressive the way a giant sequoia is impressive. Their scale is temporal, not spatial. What they have done is simply to keep living through every drought, every freeze, every millennium of climate fluctuation for longer than most human civilizations have existed. That is the achievement.
