José Serrano Adobe
California
The José Serrano Adobe in El Toro stands as one of the few surviving structures from the rancho era of Southern California. José Antonio Serrano received the Rancho Canada de los Alisos land grant from the Mexican government in eighteen forty-two, a sprawling parcel of more than ten thousand acres in what is now southern Orange County. He built his adobe home here in eighteen sixty-three, a simple one-story structure of sun-dried brick in the tradition of California rancho architecture.
Droughts from eighteen sixty-three through eighteen eighty-three forced the Serrano family to mortgage and divide the ranch, and Dwight Whiting bought the adobe in eighteen eighty-four. The adobe changed hands many times, surviving fires, floods, and development pressures that erased virtually every comparable structure in the region. It is now a California Historical Landmark, preserved as a tangible remnant of the Mexican California that predates Orange County by half a century.
