Las Flores Estancia
California
Las Flores Estancia is a remnant of the rancho era that once stretched unbroken along the entire California coast. In eighteen twenty-three the Franciscan fathers of Mission San Luis Rey established this outpost ranch, or estancia, on land overlooking the Pacific between what are now San Clemente and Oceanside. Las Flores, meaning the flowers, supplied cattle, grain, and hides to the mission economy.
When secularization stripped the missions of their lands in the eighteen thirties, the estancia became part of a string of massive private ranchos. The Las Flores Adobe that survives was built in eighteen sixty-seven and eighteen sixty-eight, during the rancho era, on the site of the older estancia. It sits today on the grounds of Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps base that absorbed most of the old rancho lands in nineteen forty-two.
Access is limited, but the site endures as a landmark whose origins predate California statehood by more than a quarter century.
