Legoland California
Near La Jolla, California
Legoland California opened in Carlsbad on March twentieth, nineteen ninety-nine, the first Legoland outside of Europe. The Danish toy company had operated its original park in Billund, Denmark since nineteen sixty-eight, but the Carlsbad opening marked the brand's American ambitions. The site was chosen in part for its mild coastal climate and its proximity to the Interstate Five corridor linking Los Angeles and San Diego.
The park's signature feature, Miniland USA, uses more than twenty million Lego bricks to recreate scale models of American landmarks including the Las Vegas Strip, New York City, Washington, and New England. The park sits on one hundred twenty-eight acres and draws more than two million visitors annually. Merlin Entertainments, a British company, acquired Legoland's parent group in two thousand five and has since expanded the Carlsbad resort to include a water park and hotel, anchoring a broader tourism cluster in northern San Diego County.
