Los Padres National Forest: The Ventana Wilderness and the Backcountry Nobody Finds

California

The Ventana Wilderness is the largest roadless area in the Santa Lucia Range, approximately two hundred forty thousand acres of steep canyon country, oak woodland, chaparral, and coastal scrub that rises from sea level at the Big Sur coast to peaks above five thousand feet only a few miles inland. Most visitors to Big Sur see the ocean side of this range from Highway One and do not go further. The Ventana is the interior they do not enter.

The terrain is difficult in a specific way: the canyons are deep, the trails gain and lose elevation aggressively, the chaparral is dense enough that off-trail travel is effectively impossible in most areas, and water sources are seasonal. The wilderness has no facilities and no maintained paved road access. The trailheads that access it from the coast require walking through poison oak and navigating unmarked creek crossings. For these reasons, the Ventana is extraordinarily beautiful and almost entirely empty of people except during the brief spring window when water flows, rattlesnake season has not peaked, and fires have not yet closed the trails.

The Los Padres National Forest surrounds the Ventana on all sides, approximately one point nine million acres extending from Monterey County south through San Luis Obispo County to the Ventura County border. It is the second largest national forest in California and encompasses the southern portion of the Santa Lucia Range, the Sespe Wilderness, and the headwaters of the Sespe River. The Chumash people, whose territory extended from Malibu north to Morro Bay, occupied this landscape for at least ten thousand years. Their rock art appears in multiple sites within the forest, and the Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park, near Santa Barbara, offers access to one of the most elaborate polychrome pictograph panels in California.

The wilderness does not announce itself. You have to go looking.
