Mount Wilson Trail: Timber Road to the Stars
California
The trail climbing above you was cut in eighteen sixty-four by Benjamin Wilson, a Tennessee-born rancher the locals called Don Benito, who needed a route to harvest timber from the mountain above his San Gabriel Valley ranch. The path he hacked through chaparral became something far more consequential than a logging road. In eighteen eighty-nine, Harvard astronomers chose the mountain's clear-sky summit to test telescopes, and equipment went up Wilson's trail piece by piece.
In nineteen oh four, George Ellery Hale founded the Mount Wilson Observatory on the same summit, where Edwin Hubble would later prove that distant nebulae were galaxies beyond our own, rewriting humanity's understanding of the cosmos. It started with one rancher needing wood.
