Ng Shing Gung: San Jose's Taoist Temple
California
At Sixth and Taylor Streets, San Jose's Chinese community once gathered at the Ng Shing Gung Temple, a Taoist house of worship that blended Buddhist imagery, folk religion, and historical ornamentation into a single gilded space. The temple's name translates roughly as a place where good fortune and virtue shelter far and wide.
San Jose's Chinese community dates to the eighteen sixties, when Chinese laborers who built the transcontinental railroad and worked the valley's orchards settled here in large numbers. The Ng Shing Gung served as a spiritual anchor for that community. Its furnishings and symbols were imported from China, making it a rare authentic expression of nineteenth-century Chinese religious life in California. The original Chinatown district was repeatedly burned and displaced by arson and civic pressure, making temples like this one both a refuge and a record of resilience.
