San Felipe Station: Where Four Trade Routes Crossed

Near Julian, California

The ground near San Felipe Creek has been a crossroads for thousands of years. Long before any European arrived, the Kamia, Cahuilla, and Diegueno peoples maintained trade routes through this pass in the mountains east of San Diego. It was a natural gateway between the coast and the desert.

In eighteen fifty-eight, the Butterfield Overland Mail established its San Felipe home station here, run by Warren Hall. The Butterfield line was the first regular overland mail service connecting the Mississippi Valley to the Pacific Coast, crossing nearly twenty-eight hundred miles in about three weeks. Stagecoaches, soldiers, trappers, and emigrants all funneled through this same narrow corridor, layering use upon use atop those original Native trails. The station is gone now, but the convergence of paths here reflects a geography that has drawn travelers toward this spot for millennia.
