The California Mid-State Fair
Near Paso Robles, California
Each summer, Paso Robles hosts one of the biggest parties on the Central Coast: the California Mid-State Fair. It fills the Paso Robles Event Center, forty acres in the heart of wine country, with carnival rides, livestock shows, rodeos, and headline concerts. The fair found its permanent home here in nineteen forty-six, when the first fair opened here as the local district fair.
Over the decades it grew from a modest county fair into a regional powerhouse, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors over its twelve-day run and booking some of the biggest names in music. In February of two thousand six, the fairgrounds were officially renamed the Paso Robles Event Center to reflect their year-round use. Today the grounds host far more than the summer fair, including craft brewing festivals, equestrian events, trade shows, and even roller derby.
But the Mid-State Fair remains its crown jewel, a place where ranch families still show their prize cattle and sheep just yards from a concert stage. It is a fitting tradition for a town that has always balanced its agricultural roots with a taste for a good celebration. Its motto says it all: the biggest little fair anywhere.
