The Canyon That Outdoes the Grand Canyon

California

The gorge below you is deeper than the Grand Canyon.

At its deepest measured point, the Kings Canyon drops approximately eight thousand two hundred feet from rim to river, measured from the summit of Spanish Mountain on the north rim down to the Kings River on the canyon floor. The Grand Canyon's deepest point, by comparison, is approximately six thousand ninety-three feet. Kings Canyon is deeper by more than two thousand feet. The National Park Service cites this in its own materials. The USGS has made the comparison. The measurement methodology, which rim to which point on the floor, can affect the exact differential, and the NPS materials note the imprecision. But the direction of the comparison is not in dispute.

This fact does not appear in most travel literature about California. It does not appear in most advertising for the Sierra Nevada. The Grand Canyon has a canyon-sized tourism infrastructure built around its superlative status, and the status has become self-reinforcing. Grand Canyon is famous for being the deepest canyon. Kings Canyon is deeper. The information is available in the park literature. It just has not penetrated.

Franklin D. Roosevelt established Kings Canyon National Park in nineteen forty, incorporating an older preserve called General Grant National Park that dated to eighteen ninety. The Kings River has been cutting this canyon for millions of years, and the glaciers that occupied it during the ice ages deepened it further. The canyon you are looking down into was shaped by forces that predate the American conversation about which canyon deserves the superlative.

It is this one. You are in it.
