The Green Store: Dublin's Oldest Building

California

The building just nearby has been doing business in one form or another since the eighteen sixties, making it among the oldest commercial structures in the Dublin area of the Tri-Valley. John Green built it as a general store, supplying the ranchers and travelers who moved through the Amador Valley along the wagon road connecting the San Joaquin Valley to San Francisco Bay. For more than half a century it served that original purpose, then shifted to a neighborhood pub, riding the social changes of the twentieth century.

The Dublin Branch Post Office operated out of a corner of the building for part of the twentieth century, tying the old store into the town's civic life. The building has since found new uses as a restaurant. In a region that has been rebuilt almost entirely in the last few decades of suburban expansion, the Green Store is a rare physical thread back to the ranching era.
