The Mission at the Center of the Revolt: Santa Inés and the Flogging That Started Everything

Near Los Olivos, California

Mission Santa Inés sits in the Santa Ynez Valley in the kind of pastoral setting that early California promoters painted over and over. Oak trees, rolling hills, a fountain in the courtyard. It is one of the less-visited missions, which is part of why what happened here on February twenty-first, eighteen twenty-four, is less well known than it should be.

A Chumash visitor from La Purisima Mission was inside the compound that morning. A soldier named Valentín Cota flogged him. The specific offense recorded in Spanish accounts may have been something as minor as his presence in a restricted area. The flogging itself was not unusual; corporal punishment of Chumash neophytes by soldiers was a regular feature of mission discipline. What was unusual was that this particular flogging happened to be the moment the Chumash at Santa Inés had decided they would not absorb another one.

More than five hundred Chumash were involved in what followed within hours. Most of the mission complex was set on fire. One soldier was killed. Within two days, word had traveled to La Purisima and to Santa Barbara, and the revolt that began in this valley had become the largest Indigenous uprising in the history of mission California, spanning three missions and four months.

The coordination was not coincidental. The revolt had been planned. The flogging at Santa Inés was the signal, or one of the signals, or the moment the decision became irreversible. Spanish and Mexican accounts written afterward expressed surprise at the speed of it. The surprise may have been genuine; the preparedness was not.

The mission church has been in continuous use since its founding in eighteen oh-four. Mass is still celebrated here. The courtyard has the fountain and the oak trees. The flogging and the fire and the four-month war that followed from this ground are the history the building contains and does not display.
