The Zentgraf Vineyard: A German Farmer's Wager
California
When the Gold Rush consumed California in the early eighteen fifties, most men chased placer dust in the Sierra foothills. According to the marker here, Jacob Zentgraf made a different bet. A German immigrant born in eighteen twenty-one, he settled here on Sweetwater Creek in eighteen fifty-four and planted grapes on land where a Mr.
Stevens had already begun a small vineyard. While forty-niners gambled their futures in the diggings, Zentgraf cultivated steady harvests from the valley soil. He farmed this land for more than half a century, dying here in nineteen eleven at the age of eighty-nine.
His choice captured something central to Gold Rush California: for every miner who struck it lucky, a quiet farmer who never picked up a gold pan often outlasted them all.
