Doc Holliday's Grave

Colorado

On this hillside above Glenwood Springs lies the most famous gunfighter most people never expected to die in bed. John Henry Holliday, the Georgia dentist turned gambler known as Doc, came west chasing relief from tuberculosis. He survived the gunfight at the O.

K. Corral in eighteen eighty-one beside Wyatt Earp, then drifted to Colorado hoping the hot vapor caves would ease his failing lungs. They did not.

He died in a room at the Hotel Glenwood on the eighth of November, eighteen eighty-seven, at just thirty-six years old. The story goes that he looked at his bare feet and laughed, This is funny, because he had always sworn he would die with his boots on. He was buried somewhere in this cemetery, but no one knows exactly where.

The November ground may have been frozen solid. The marker here simply says he rests someplace nearby.
