Dupont, Colorado
Colorado
Dupont is a small unincorporated community on the northeastern edge of the Denver metro area, named for the E. I. du Pont de Nemours company, which owned property there, and given a post office in nineteen twenty-six.
The company's plant is said to have manufactured dynamite and blasting powder for Colorado's mines and quarries, products in relentless demand through the early twentieth century. Many workers and their families are said to have lived in company housing in the classic industrial paternalism of the era. After the plant wound down, the community persisted as a working-class enclave.
Today Dupont is an unincorporated Adams County community beside Commerce City, reached by the Denver metro's northward sprawl, its explosive origins mostly forgotten beneath warehouses and transit corridors.
