Eugene Field Cottage
Colorado
This small cottage in Washington Park once belonged to one of America's most beloved children's poets. Eugene Field, who wrote the bedtime classic Wynken, Blynken, and Nod, lived here from eighteen eighty-one to eighteen eighty-three while serving as managing editor of the Denver Tribune. Those Denver years were among the most productive of his career, when his famous newspaper column found its voice.
After Field moved on to Chicago, the house fell into neglect at its original spot near West Colfax Avenue. It might have been demolished if not for an unlikely rescuer. The Pen Women turned to Margaret Brown, the Titanic survivor remembered as the Unsinkable Molly Brown, who helped save the cottage and see it donated to the city.
It was moved to Washington Park, where it has served as a neighborhood library and a home for civic groups, a humble landmark to a poet's Denver days.
