Keenesburg, Colorado
Colorado
Keenesburg sits on the high plains of Weld County about forty miles northeast of Denver, named for Les Keene, a Kentucky homesteader who settled the area east of the present town. When the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad laid tracks through in the early nineteen hundreds the community that formed around the depot initially called itself Keene. It was officially incorporated as a town on June fourth, nineteen nineteen.
The name overlapped with other places called Keene, and the town added the suffix burg to become Keenesburg. Today it sits along Interstate Seventy-Six and is home to the Wild Animal Sanctuary, one of the largest rescue facilities for captive-held large carnivores in the world.
