Lowry Chapel One, the Eisenhower Chapel

Colorado

This simple white chapel is one of the last pieces of Lowry Air Force Base, the sprawling training field that once stood here in east Denver. Construction began on July eighth, nineteen forty-one, and the chapel was dedicated on November twenty-third, just fourteen days before the attack on Pearl Harbor pulled the country into war. It was the first of four wooden chapels built to serve airmen, officers, and their families, and it was set aside for Protestant worship.

Its lasting fame came later. When Dwight Eisenhower was president, he often summered in Denver with his wife Mamie, whose family lived nearby, and this little chapel became his spiritual home in the city. When the base wound down, the other three chapels were torn away in the early nineteen seventies.

This one was saved for Eisenhower's sake, placed on the National Register, and is now known as the Eisenhower Chapel.
