The Pillars at Nine Mile Corner
Near Boulder, Colorado
These two stone pillars near the corner of Arapahoe Road and the highway were meant to be the grand gateway to a road that never got built. In the nineteen twenties, Boulder's civic leaders met the new age of automobile tourism with ambition. They planned a Road of Remembrance honoring Boulder County's soldiers from the First World War, and in nineteen twenty-eight they completed a memorial gateway of two stone towers and a flagpole, set in a small park.
The pillars were built to hold a memorial plaque to the county's troops. The grand road itself was never finished, but the gateway remained. Nine Mile Corner has marked this prairie intersection east of the foothills ever since.
