National Brewing Company, Home of Natty Boh
Delaware
The National Brewing Company was founded in eighteen eighty-five on a Highlandtown site where John Baier had dug beer cellars in the eighteen fifties. National's signature product, National Bohemian, debuted in eighteen eighty-five and became the best-selling beer in Maryland, eventually known simply as Natty Boh. In the nineteen forties, National pioneered the six-pack of canned beer, and it later became an official sponsor of the Baltimore Orioles.
The Pabst Brewing Company bought the brand in two thousand, and today Natty Boh is made in Ohio and Georgia. The old smokestack and the one-eyed mustachioed mascot on the neon sign above the city have become two of the most recognizable landmarks in Baltimore, outlasting the brewery by decades.
